I have finally, with help, discovered info re my Grt Grt Grandfather Robert DUNBAR & from where he came (Robertson/Dunbar/Madden Family Connection) plus 3 earlier generations. My Robert (1823-1847) was born in Forres, Moray, Scotland to Joseph DUNBAR(1786-1857) & Charlotte TULLOCH (1791-1859) 0ne of 7 siblings. Appears to have arrived in Bengal c.1840/41. His brother James (1826-1872) also came to India & married Charlotte Snowball nee Cullen (had 7 children)… Perhaps also one or 2 other brothers came too! Robert married Margaret Crofts in 1842 in Kurnaul. He was Overseer in Botanical Gardens in Saharunpore. They had Grt Grandfather Denis William DUNBAR in 1844 in Almorah & Martha in 1846. Robert died in 1847 aged 23yrs in Hawulbagh. Margaret re-married George Teeling in 1848 & imagine was still caring for Denis & Martha. She & George had a dau. August 1850 then Margaret died Dec.1850 (the baby also died in 1851) in Jullunder. George then also re-married to Mary Jane Goff in 1852. Do not know where the children were. Found a G.Teeling & wife in the July 1857 Census taken at the Agra Fort at the time of the Mutiny, but no kids ….I wonder if they were in boarding school elsewhere. Cannot find anything more re George & wife – perhaps they died during the Mutiny- nor anything more about Martha – either early death or marriage. Denis of course survived & married Sarah Anne Rabbitt in 1867. I am so pleased to have last discovered Robert’s origins but would love to know where he grew up & with whom.

    Sorry,
Have not been around for awhile due to death of husband & Mum & responsibilities due to old folk, however an very surprised that not one person has even queried a name on the family tree I am tracing in India…. over nearly a 200yr period!….. Time is getting short – those who remember or have researched in this time period are “dropping off the perch”….. Is there something else I can do other than list the names I am interested in in my Family Tree?

Dear Christine, Tried answering you from the email message I got but that was denied delivery!! (How I hate the internet – learning Latin was easier!) My half Gt Gt GrandAunt was Mary Solitude b.1824. Her Mum was My 3 x Gt Grandmother Mary Robertson nee (Skinner) who died in 1826 after marrying 2nd husband James Solitude in 1821. Mary Solitude (Jnr) b. 1824 married John Richard Rondeau in 1846 & went on to have at least 6 kids – then I think she died (abt. 1862) & John Richard re-married & had more family. This is where I got to before my hubby died just 2 short yrs ago & since then I have been trying to get “his family” in order to pass on to his descendants [not mine as ours was 2nd marriage]. Before then I did more Rondeau research & although it’s not on my computor file, I have paperwork which I believe suggests that W.B.Rondeau was my John Richard’s Father & if so then possibly the much younger brother (or half brother) of your Marie Elizabeth. If this was the case then she would have been 15yrs old at the time of his birth & may already have been married herself! [13/14yrs was common at that time for a 1st marriage in India especially if they had lost a parent or two! I will try to locate the paperwork I have accumulated & see why “W.B. Rondeau” seems to jump out at me. Some seem to think that the “Rondeau” name was common back then but I suspect one family/ + step-families were prolific for a generation or so ’cause then the name seems to disappear. I have located one distant cousin in UK (I live Australia) who is descended from Mary Solitude & John Richard Rondeau, Both Marys being our common ancestors!……. Happy to continue contact – if only to eliminate dud leads!

My mother was a Polish nurse attached to the British army (following her escape via Persia when released from Siberian labour camp. Probably part of “Ander’s Army). She spent from early 1943-mid 1945 based in Karachi. Camp Obiz abt 10miles out of Karachi was a huge Army Camp – all tents – There were several hospitals, some army, some Red Cross, a Polish hospital as well. the area was full of hospitals! The nurses were also seconded out to other hospitals who needed them, including the Americans. There were thousands of civilian refugees from Europe, mostly Poles released from labour camps, who had come in via the Caspian Sea & Teheran; & as the Persian civil revolution developed many were shunted on to Karachi, which was of course still India as Pakistan did not then exist. There were also many British refugees from the Asia Pacific area who had fled from the Japanese invasion as well as wounded military personel….. who often went on R&R into the desert!
Typhoid was one of the main scourges of the refugees and many were already dying of it when they arrived at the hospitals (others died & were thrown off the trains on the way). Most were also suffering Malnutrition and Malaria as well. One nurse coped with abt 200 or more patients at a time so you can imagine how common were the deaths. They were always short of provisions and didn’t even have gloves. One of the biggest problems were communication as very few, whether patients or staff, understood each others languages. Also “boys” who were necessary for the the menial jobs in the hospitals worked strictly to “caste” and most refused to touch the dead. When burials took place it was usually by neccesity in a communal grave for health reasons
Was your Beatrice a refugee, a local civilian or in one of the forces? I very much doubt there would be too much info available other than that you know she died of Typhoid. The history surrounding her being in Karachi may provide more clues or perhaps the International Red Cross may be able to help. I have photos taken at the camp Obiz which I have been meaning to send to Fibis (via snail mail) for the files however am still trying to figure out how I could do identify them easily!
    Hope this helps,
    Jenny

It’s not Fibis or the system – my photos are prints & I do not have a scanner connected to this laptop.   Have to travel to get techo help.   have had no success with  USB – don’t know why.   I think it’ll be easier to do it the old way – it’s just that it takes so long!….sorry I’m a nuisance….it just gets so frustrating!
