late to this as I am a new member but I am very interested in the British Indian Families, especially as I have tried every which way I can to get more information about my Indian Family.

My paternal Great Gran was a Crawford, born “at sea” in or around 1883 – although the only mention I have ever found of that was in the 1911 census. I have found no other records of her life apart from when she married my Great Grandfather in 1902, Robert Yates.
Her father was listed as FR Crawford…and that is as far as I have got.

My Grandfather Robert Frederick Yates and his 2 siblings Mary Dorothy and Francis Thomas Victor were born in Belgaum in 1903, 1907 and 1910.

I cannot find anything definite and there are so many Crawfords in India. It has ground my whole tree to a halt when it is barely a sapling.
I would love to find out more but the Indian mob is my “brick wall”.

    So, Crawford..that is it.

Yes. If there is any Murphy’s from India out there. Been trying for the last 8 years to find my elusive 3rd great-grandfather who was born between 1813 and 1827 in India. He ended up in South Africa where in 1845 he married my 3rd great-grandmother

I think there would be more traffic on the discussion forum if it was easier to find. I have just joined FIBIS and have found it difficult to get to the right place on this website – but I am here now!

My initial interest is in the Soundy family of Bombay and its connection with the Bombay Volunteer Rifles, particularly Arthur Francis Soundy (1836-1911) and his son Arthur Frank Soundy (born 1880), both members of this local unit.

    Hello All,

Need help finding my family ancestry from my Father’ side. Mostly from the south of India.

    Paternal side Fraser
    Maternal side Moss

This is what I git to know so far. Any information is highly appreciated!!!

The Moss side I was told was that my GGG Grandfather was born in Cardiff or In Ireland(around the Cork county area) Traveled to Sri Lanka and married a Mary Vanderstraaten. Had children by the names of Dr George Moss, James William Moss, Alice Moss and Lydia Moss. Nothing is known of James and Mary after that or their children but James William Moss the 2nd was born in Colombo in the 1850-60 and married Sophia with a surname that started with a C. Moved to India and had 2 sons Arnold Moss and James William Moss. James William Moss 3rd married Jane(Joana) Severina Souza. They had at the least 6 children, Irene Jane Moss(My grandmother), James William Moss, Ivan Moss, Rolland H Moss, Majorie C Moss, Lionel P Moss. Some born in Mangalore and Some in Calicut or Cannanore Kerela. Irene Jane Moss(My grandmother) married Innocent Joseph Fraser. Irene passed away in 1951 in Quetta leaving behind 6 children. Marsha, Aubrey, Lloyd, Ashley, Stafford and Adrian. Innocent Joseph Fraser passed away 1985 in Denmark.

Anyone have any information on the Moss family please give me a shout!

The mystery that needs solving is with the Fraser side of the family. My grandfather Innocent Joseph Fraser was born in Kerela to Harold Fraser and Theresa Fraser. I cannot find any information on them. I was told that Theresa may have married 3 or 4 times. Once to a surname Scott, I do not know the first name. I am not sure how many children they had but I know of a daughter she had with Scott who went on to live in the USA and married a Patterson. I was told she had 2 more daughters who stayed back in India and one of them may have gone by the name of Agnes not sure. All in the south of India. My grandfather Innocent did not get along with his Father and somewhere a surname changed happened. I am not sure how and when.

Again any information will help and is highly appreciated!

    Regards

    Wesley Fraser

    I am interested, in brief:

    James Murray (birth unknown)
Married Eliza Green (birth unknown) – in 1839, Madras

Children, include: Prudentiana Murray (b. 1841), James Murray, Agnes Murray, Mariana Murray, William Murray (b. 1841), Frances Murray (b. 1846, who married a Patrick Mulcahy in 1859 and then a Louis Brito – she died aged 32).

Prudentiana Murray married a Thomas Ryan in 1857 at St Thomas Mount, Madras, had several children, Caroline, Agnes, Thomas, James, in India, then several in Ireland (Tulla, County Clare) and England (Bury, Lancashire) after leaving India in 1867.

My Family name is Lee and I have very little information about their time in India from about 1850 to about 1886. My Great-Grandfather, William Lee, was in the Royal Artillery, trained as a gunner at Sheerness and is listed as a sergeant in the Baptism details of his children, I have found on Ancestry.com. He married a girl of 14, my great-grandmother, in Agra, and one child, Elizabeth Adelaide, was born in Agra. My GGM was named Ann Nolan but I have no idea how she came to be in India. She was Irish, born in Sheffield. From my own conversations with my grandfather and great Aunt, I know that my GGF was the superintendent of a prison, either Allahabad or Lucknow. I wonder if he worked at Agra first. The next 2 children, Edward (my grandfather), and Theresa Margaret are listed as born in Lucknow but the description of the place from my Great Aunt sounds more like Allahabad. She said it was where 2 holy rivers meet and Indians bath in the holy waters. There were festivals where thousands came. She told me my GGF rode on an elephant, that would kneel only for him to mount. I have been in touch with a researcher at Naini prison in Allahabad but he tells me there are no records, pre-independence at the prison. I have scoured the websites of the Royal Artillery, the India Office, the National Library, the National Archives, Forces Records, Ancestry and FindMyPast.com to no avail. I have a a service number 1240 but that doesn’t seem to work. I have read there was a list called the unattached list, for army personnel who were working in non-military tasks, like prisons. However, I have no idea how to find this list. Has anyone any idea where I should go next?
