    Hi,

Farrier Major Phillip Ranger is listed on the medal roll of the 1st Bombay Light Cavalry for the 1848/1849 Punjab medal. He is shown as being entitled to the Mooltan and Chillianwala clasps on his medal reflecting that he took part in each of those battles.

Unfortunately, my copy of the medal roll for the 1st Bombay Light Cavalry (Lancers) for the 1838-39 Ghuznee medal is incomplete, so I can’t confirm if Phillip Ranger served with the regiment during the battle for Ghuznee, the other battle he most likely would have served in. Nevertheless, given the dates you listed for his service with the regiment, I strongly suspect he was also entitled to the medal for Ghuznee.

Interestingly, on the Punjab medal roll for the 1st Bombay Light Cavalry there is also a Joseph Ranger listed, with the “rank” of Hospital Apprentice. Joseph Ranger was also entitled to the Mooltan and Chillianwala clasps to his medal. Given they were serving in the same regiment, I strongly suspect they were related.

I realize this information is not much help with your brick wall but I hope it is of some help in developing a picture of Phillip’s life.

    Tim B.
