Introducing Charles Hayter

FIBIS would like to introduce Dr Charles Hayter, one of our Speakers who will be giving a presentation at our 2024 Conference. His talk is entitled “Doctoring in the Tropics: Medical Life in Colonial India “ .

His presentation will cover the history of medical services in colonial India, including the emergence of the field of tropical medicine, the development of medical education, and the interaction between European and indigenous modes of healing. It will also include tips for researching your medical ancestors in British India.

Dr. Charles Hayter, MA, is a Toronto-based physician, medical historian, and author who is of Anglo-Indian descent. He is a former Associate Professor in the University of Toronto and a past President of the Canadian Society for the History of Medicine.  His interests include the use of story and drama to illustrate medical concepts and history. His most recent book is Cancer Confidential: Backstage Dramas in the Radiation Clinic (University of Toronto Press, 2022).
