Up Country by Miss Emily Eden is a journal of letters she wrote to her other sister back in England. Emily and her sister were in India with their brother Lord Auckland who was the Governor-General 1838-40 (or thereabouts).

Her journal is fascinating. They left Calcutta with an enormous entourage including bearers, regiments etc., with a massive number of horses, camels and elephants, together with tents, cooking apparatus, chairs, sofas, beds, chests etc. They were going to Simla for the hot season but stopped en route at every place where there were East India Company personnel. They also met up with Indian Princes/Maharjahas on the way. Emily was also a brilliant artist and her sketches of, in particular, the Indian princes, the animals and buildings (mainly ruins) are incredible.

Her sister wrote a journal which she sent to a friend and this also has interesting sketches, although not quite as good as Emily’s.
