Please would someone suggest where I could look for information on my 3 x great grandfather Edmund O’Brien? He died in 1827 in Calcutta whilst a firefighter with the Police Force in Calcutta. All I have found so far is his burial record and will. His wife and two daughters came to Calcutta from London in 1827 – possibly after being told he was ill (?). Would it be possible to find out when he started in the Police Force?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Is anyone able to advise me please?

How would I look up the HEIC records for someone in the Police Force? Would this be the Civil Service or is he likely to have been in the HEIC army? According to his Will/Administration he was “a British Subject and Overseer in the Fire Department of the Police Office in Calcutta.” He was 43 when he died in 1827.

Hello Steph – your question is a difficult one to answer, which is maybe why no-one has yet. Frankly, I don’t know how the appointment of Police people was handled. I suspect they fell into the broad category of Uncovenanted Civil Service, but am not sure.
Have you tried to find Edmund O’Brien listed in one of the East India Registers and Directories for the time period when you know he was in Calcutta? If not, suggest you do this – many copies are on-line and hot-linked through a Directories page in the FIBIwiki – I would begin by seeing if he appears in the Bengal lists of Civil Servants or in the ‘European Inhabitants’ – if the latter, then he is ‘non-official’. Also look to see if there is a section on Police.

Hello Sylvia – many thanks for your reply. I have looked in the Bengal lists of Civil Servants and not found him but I will check again in case I missed him or in case it was not the right year. I don’t know how long he had worked for the HEIC. I did not think to check the lists of European Inhabitants.

I’ll let you know if I find anything.
