Edmund O’Brien was a fire fighter attached to the Police Service in Calcutta. I have found a burial record for Edmund O’Brien, “of the Police Department” He died on 30th March 1827 but it does not say what he died of (presumably an illness or accident). His will was not proved until 1831.

On 7th March 1827 Mary O’Brien and her daughters Mary Ann and Ellen, having got a Bond (for £600) from the East India Company in London, travelled to Calcutta. I presume she must have had a letter to say that her husband was ill but he would have died by the time they arrived.

His will was not proved until 1831 because there seemed to be a problem with it. He was very ill at the time and after his death the men who witnessed his will signed an affidavit to swear that Edmond had dictated his will but he was unable to sign it with his name because he was so weak, so he signed it with a cross. The will was made in favour of his wife Mary who had been living in London.

I have not yet found a pension record for Mary, as a widow, and do not know whether she and her daughters stayed in India or whether they went home again. (I found her outward journey to Calcutta but not a return journey.) I don’t think she could have married again because I know that she was in Ireland with her daughter Mary Ann and son-in-law in the 1860s and still called Mary O’Brien.

I have announcements found on FIBIS of the marriages of her daughters, Mary Ann and Ellen who both married in Calcutta in 1843.

Ellen married Joseph Burke of HM 50th regiment. I would like to know what happened to her. I have not managed to find any records of baptisms of children or her death. I think Joseph may have changed regiments several times so he is difficult to follow.

I would like to find out more about Edmond’s job in the Police Department. Would that be in the Uncovenented Civil Service?
