I am trying to identify the parents of ANN CLAYBURN, and would be grateful for any Clayburn/Claybourne material from the Madras Presidency.

    What I have, all primary:

    – Marriage: Charles BLAZEY (Bugler, 2nd Bn Artillery) x Ann CLAYBURN, 12 July 1836, St John’s, Trichinopoly, by banns. IOR N/2/17 f.128 (BL image read). Ann signed with her mark; witnesses A. Kelly and R. Woods. No parents are recorded, as is normal for the 1836 form.
    – Their son William Thomas Blazey, baptised 25 Oct 1839 Trichinopoly, “son of Charles Blazey Bugler 2d Battn Arty and Anne his wife”.
    – Ann was buried 3 Dec 1861 at Pallavaram, Madras. Born about 1819.

    Where I am stuck:

    1. Ann’s own baptism. I cannot find it. She should be c.1813-1823, and I would expect a Madras N/2 entry, but she is absent from every index I have searched, including the FIBIS database under Clayburn, Claybourn, Clayborne, Claiborne and Claybourne, exact and soundex.

    2. The only Clayburn in the FIBIS database in that window is a burial: “Benjm Clayburn, Pte of H.M. 48th Regt, aged 33, buried 1 July 1825 at Trichinopoly” (St John’s Trichinopoly burial registers, p.151, interred by Jos. Wright, Chaplain). Several online trees make this man Ann’s father. I do not think he can be: HM 48th Foot was in New South Wales until 1824 and only reached India in 1824-25, so he was not in Madras in 1819 when Ann was born.

    3. There is separately a Benjamin Clayburn marrying at Madras on 20 Dec 1824, and later Clayburns at Madras (Benjamin Clayburn x Elizabeth Cameron 1865, N/2 vol 46 f.106; Benjamin Clayburn x Annie Moore 1871-75, N/11 vol 4 f.895). That suggests a Madras-resident Clayburn family distinct from the 48th Foot soldier.

    So my questions:

    – Does anyone hold, or know of, a Clayburn baptism at Madras or Trichinopoly c.1813-1823?
    – Is there a known Madras Clayburn family in this period, and is the 1824-marrying Benjamin the same man as the 1825-buried private, or a different one?
    – Are there Trichinopoly or St Thomas’ Mount artillery-station sources beyond the N/2 returns that would carry a soldier’s family in the 1810s-20s?

Any pointers gratefully received. I am happy to share what I have on the Blazey line at Trichinopoly and Moulmein in return.
