The sub-title is ‘The Wreck of the Grosvenor and The Strange Fate of Her Survivors’ pub Norton & Co 2004 ISBN:0-393-05085-8. The Grosvenor was said to be one of the finest East Indiamen of her day – until she was wrecked on the South African coast 4 August 1782. The author acknowledges previous research and publications about the Grosvenor but has added detailed research into the passengers who boarded in Calcutta and in Madras, and the crew. He has reconstructed as far as can be done, the journeyings in Africa of both the survivors and deceased. Towards the end of the book Mr Taylor also looks at descendants in African villages of other shipwrecked persons, mainly in the quest to discover if Lydia Logie survived. Some of these later chapters are a little tedious, but all in all, this is a great and well researched read, which I would recommend to anyone with ranking ancestors in 18th century Calcutta.
