ParticipantRegistering my research interests. This is one connected family at Madras, Trichinopoly and Pallavaram, roughly 1810 to 1950, largely artillery and railway people. I would be glad to hear from anyone working the same names, and equally glad to share what I hold, which is mostly primary and includes a number of IOR N/2 register images.
BLAZEY – Charles Blazey (b. c.1813 Bombay), Bugler, 2nd Bn Artillery, m. Ann Clayburn 12 Jul 1836 at St John’s, Trichinopoly; d. 1898. Children baptised at Trichinopoly, at Moulmein in Burma (1844-48, following the artillery posting) and at Madras. Son William Thomas Blazey b. 15 Sep 1839, Ordnance Artificer, m. (1) Mary Ann Turton 1862 Trichinopoly, (2) Eliza Amelia Herne 8 Feb 1865 Trichinopoly. The family goes back to Wymondham, Norfolk.
CLAYBURN – Ann Clayburn, b. c.1819, bur. 3 Dec 1861 Pallavaram. Her parents are my brick wall; separate topic posted.
HERNE – William Herne m. Elizabeth Sophia Borthwick 1843 Bangalore; daughter Eliza Amelia m. William Blazey 1865. Joseph Herne (William’s father) is a wall.
BORTHWICK – Peter Borthwick and his wife Maria, Madras, children incl. Elizabeth Sophia, Archibald (b.1821 Jaulnah), Richard (d.1843), Amelia Barbara (m. Jarvis 1848, d.1854 Trichinopoly), William (d.1901 Bangalore). Peter’s own parents are a wall.
HUNTER – John Augustus Hunter m. Georgiana PIERSALL; son Joseph Hunter m. Laura Anne Blazey 16 Oct 1889 Vepery. Their daughter Ellen/Helen Herne Hunter b. 2 Jan 1903 Madras. Georgiana d. 12 Sep 1888.
PIERSALL – Joseph Piersall, Georgiana’s father, Madras. Completely dry in every text index I have tried, including the whole FIBIS database and 84 almanac and register volumes. Any Piersall at Madras at all would interest me.
SWINGLER – Richard Milward Swingler, b. c.1815, bur. 18 Sep 1875 Pallavaram aged 60; his son Thomas Edward Swingler (bapt. Pallavaram 1859) m. Bridget Amelia Hunter. A 1999 Members’ Interests entry in this Society’s Journal (no. 2, p.10, from Ann Rodgers Dargie) gives Richard’s father as Thomas Swingler and a marriage to Charlotte HERBERT in 1842 – I would very much like to hear from anyone who can confirm either, or who knows what became of that enquiry. Also seeking the maiden name of the Isabella who was Richard’s wife by the 1850s.
