ParticipantHello
I am hoping someone may be able to help me. I am having real difficulty in finding anything out about my ancestors over in East India and it all seems a mess with marriages, more marriages, under age marriages, early deaths and use of aliases. This is what I know..( or don’t know as the case is).
My Great Grandmother was Estelle (Stella) Miriam Crawford, born 1882 “at sea”. The only mention of this is in the 1911 census return where she is Estelle Phillip Yates.
I have never found any trace of her birth anywhere. She married in Belgaum in 1902 to Robert Yates. Her father was listed as FR Crawford.
The only FR Crawford I found was an Apothecar who sometimes went as Fred, sometimes as Robert. Frederick Robert Crawford seemed to be married to Amelia Phillips (who was previously Amelia Carvalho until she married George Phillips). Amelia then dies in 1884 and Fred then dies in 1885 and by then he is married to Louisa Theresa who was previously married to Emmanual Carvalho who happened to be Amelia’s father and was also an Apothecar.
Fred Robert’s father is listed as James Crawford and Emmanuel’s father is listed as Joachim Antonio Carvalho. Louisa was Louisa Fox when she married Emmanual Carvalho at age 14.I have also found a few marriages for Fred/Robert to an Eliza McCabe, A Margaret Grimes, and to Amelia. I have also found his will where he names his children but the records I then found for the children list their Father’s name as Robert and Mother’s name as Eliza (ok, all good so far) but nothing for Stella at all.
Stella (my G Gran) and Robert had 3 children in India in 1903, 1907 and 1910 ( my Grandfather, Aunt Dot and Uncle Francis) in Allabad and St Thomas Mount.
There seem to be so many Crawfords and Carvalho’s and I am just going round in circles looking. none of the records seem to be what I am looking for and I have been hunting for months…can anyone please point me in the right direction?? I know the answers are in India somewhere. My DNA results show ancestry from both Portugal and India.
