Hedley Sutton: “The Indian Mutiny: some primary and secondary sources about those who fought on the British side”.

This session doesn’t aim to provide a historical overview of causes and consequences, but concentrates on how family historians might find out about the military careers of those involved. Intended to highlight published and manuscript sources held by the British Library which shed light on the lives and military careers of European officers and men who were involved in the events of 1857-58.

As well as a FIBIS Trustee, Hedley is a professional librarian who has worked at the British Library for over thirty years. He joined the Library as a cataloguer in what was then called the Bibliographic Services Division in 1982.  Early in 1988 he moved to the India Office Library and Records Section (later renamed the Oriental & India Office Collections … then Asia, Pacific & Africa Collections … and now Asian & African Studies) as Serials and Acquisitions Librarian, before taking up his current role in the Reference Enquiry team in 1999. Since then, he has managed the small team which provides the front-of-house and remote enquiry service for that part of the Library’s vast collections.

A historian by training, he deals regularly with a wide range of family history enquiries from all over the world.  He also contributes occasionally to the Library’s “Untold Lives” blog

In Hedley’s free time, he likes to write limericks and, when he started to come across websites that covered interesting niche subject areas, he was inspired to write a series of blogs called If Websites Could Talk.
