Jarrett’s photograph albums

29 Oct | News,

Information and images from the first two photograph albums compiled by Major Hubert Cecil Delacour Jarrett (1876-1919) are now available online.

Photographs of Tibet 1904

The then Lieutenant Jarrett of the 19th Punjabis Regiment compiled an album of his time in the British Expedition to Tibet during 1904 (also known as the Younghusband Expedition) using both his own and commercial photographs interleaved with a copy of his journal. Images of the album are in the Personal Collection Section of the FIBIS Gallery

The majority of the people in the photographs are named, both British and national, making this an invaluable resource for researchers. The named individuals are indexed in the FIBIS database with a link to the relevant image in the FIBIS Gallery.

Black album 1895-1910

A second album compiled by H. C. D. Jarrett covers a longer period, stretching from his time at the Royal Military College at Sandhurst in 1895 until 1910 when the Khyber Rifles were presented with medals for the Zakka Khel Expedition of 1908. There is a sprinkling of wedding, holiday and travel photos, but once again the particular treasures are the formal military photos in which the majority of the subjects, both British and national, are named. These names are searchable in the FIBIS database with links through to the photograph album appearing in the Personal Collection section of the FIBIS Gallery https://gallery.fibis.org/index.php?/category/89

Work is shortly to begin on indexing Jarrett’s final album.

Eleanor Neil and Jonathan Lee, New Zealand FIBIS members, would like to thank Christine Thesiger and family for their permission to copy and index the albums. Mrs Thesiger intends to deposit the actual albums in a suitable archive where researchers will be able to examine the originals.

Thanks also to Martin Tolley and Sandra Seager for their assistance in uploading the images and indexes.
