The Scottish Cemetery was laid out in Calcutta (Kolkata) in 1820. It contains 1,600 headstones and monuments and 4,000 burials but fell into disrepair in the 1970s.  In 2008 the Kolkata Scottish Heritage Trust (KSHT) was established to restore the cemetery.

Charles Bruce chairs the Kolkata Scottish Heritage Trust which is restoring a nineteenth century cemetery in Kolkata. He is active in conservation and in 1994 helped to establish a training centre on his family estate for teaching traditional building skills; over 20,000 training places have been provided here. A member of the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs, he’s involved with the Scottish diaspora overseas.

He is a graduate of the Universities of St Andrews and Dundee.
