FIBIS is excited to announce that two very rare souvenir magazines pertaining to the 1911 Coronation Durbar have been scanned and added to the FIBIS database for all to access. These special editions of the “Illustrated Weekly” and “The Empress” magazines, that were kindly donated to the Society, contain a wonderful narrative of the scenes that unfolded during the Durbar together with wonderful photographs of the event and several portraits of the dignitaries that were in attendance. Perhaps you will find your own ancestor portrayed in these photographs. The magazines also contain curious contemporaneous adverts that are sure to delight some readers. The 1911 Delhi Durbar took place on 12 December at Coronation Park in Delhi and was held to mark the accession to the throne of King George V and Queen Mary and allow their proclamation as Emperor and Empress of India. It was a mass assembly attended by thousands of government officials, dignitaries and locals. This resource will be of great value to both researchers and curious readers alike. The magazines can be found in the FIBIS database by clicking on the “Publications > Newspapers/Periodicals” tab in the “Browse Records” section of the database.
