Amir of Afghanistan 1878

The Suffolk Regiment in Afghanistan

13 Feb | New to FIBIS database,

We at FIBIS are delighted to share a new addition to the gallery on our website: images from two remarkable and historically significant photographic albums, displayed with the kind permission of the Suffolk Regiment Museum.

The regiment, originally known as the 12th Regiment of Foot (later the Suffolk Regiment), served in Afghanistan and India between 1876 and 1892. The first album, entitled “Afghanistan: Attock to Kabul (1878–1880)”, was presented to the 1st Battalion Officers’ Mess by Captain F. W. Scudamore in January 1885. The second album, “Afghanistan, England (c.1880–1905)”, was added at a later date.

Together, the albums contain a fascinating collection of photographs depicting landscapes, towns and cities, architecture, the Kabul River, and many images of soldiers alongside local inhabitants. They offer a rare visual insight into the regiment’s service and the regions in which it operated.
