FIBIS talks

Thursday 11:15 - 12:00
Theatre 3 - Researching ancestors in British India

Over three million Britons lived in India over the three and a half centuries of British involvement in that country. The great majority of these served as civil servants, soldiers, engineers, railwaymen, etc. helping to build and maintain the country as it grew as an important world power in the 20th century.

Peter Bailey will outline the records, their location and methods available for tracing ancestors who lived in British India and South Asia from 1600 until Independence in 1947.

Impressed by the increased number of workshops at WDYTYA this year. Unfortunately I won’t be able to attend.
I am very interested in particular, in the session on Telegrahers in British India as I have several ancestors who were in the telegraph service from the mid 1900s including my grandfather who was brought back from retirement to set up the communications for the British Army in India in WW2 . I would like to make contact with the speaker as I won’t be able to attend .

THanks Valmay, I ll contact Peter. I met him last September at his Researching your Indian Army ancestors talk at BL but I don’t suppose he’ll remember me. He doesn’t live far from either. I plan to attend the May meeting in London.

Will the ‘Researching ancestors in British India’ talk (which was in Theatre 3 on the Thursday) be uploaded to the site please?

We have a backlog of videos to be edited and uploaded to the website, so I can’t say for sure when it will be uploaded.

Would it be possible for the PowerPoint presentations from WDYTYA to be uploaded to the website for members to download. Wouldn’t this be easier than the videos?

We used to ask for copies of speaker PowerPoints, but many didn’t want to give us copies. Not everyone has PowerPoint either, I know I don’t. Plus from the presentations I saw the slides were just prompts for the speaker and don’t make much sense without the spoken words.
