I am trying to research my g-g-grandfather. I have very limited information. His name was Henry E. Cook and he was born in 1847-1848 in India. His death certificate lists his parents as Henry Edmund Cook and Alice Sharpe but I don’t have any documents to verify that. The family legend is that he was born in India and when he was a young child he was sent back to England (possibly Scotland) with his sister to go to school. While he was at school, his parents and siblings all died in India. Eventually he emigrated and ended up in the United States living in New York state and then Massachusetts. I have a subscription to FIBIS but have had no luck in finding any information. Can anyone suggest a possible research path? (I haven’t been able to locate his U.S. records such as naturalization paperwork or marriage certificates.) Thank you in advance for any assistance and advice.

In further research on Henry E. Cook, I have discovered that one of the children’s birth records says he was born in India (what the family has always been told and believed) but the other child’s birth record says he was born in East Indies. Is East Indies a designation for a portion of the Indian continent or a totally different place? He was born in 1848 but I haven’t found any primary sources that give me a birth place. Thanks.
