Diary provides a wonderful snapshot of British social life in India around Simla in 1930

Through a generous donation, a diary that provides a fascinating insight into British social life in India in 1930 has recently been added to the Member’s Only section of the FIBIS website. 

In 1928, Lillian Daphne Emerson travelled to India and wrote in a journal of her time on the boat out and kept a diary for most of 1930.  The diary includes a number of photographs of events such as polo matches, golfing and skiing as well as show and gymkhana programmes and a couple of programmes for the Inauguration of New Delhi in 1931.  It is a fascinating read and we are grateful to the author’s descendant for the kind donation. 

To view the diary log in to the FIBIS website and click on the Members Area tab in the menu and then click on Member’s Only Material in the drop-down.  Then click on Personal Papers and you will find the diary under the Diaries and Journals heading.
