Events at the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, Coventry

The Herbert Art Gallery in Coventry are currently hosting an exhibition of photographer Jason Scott Tilley ‘s photographs taken in India, together with a sample of his grandfather ‘s work.   His grandfather, Bert Scott, worked for the Times of India until 1947.   We announced the exhibition last year, with a review on the FIBIS website – https://www.fibis.org/news/people-india-exhibition-review/.  To link with this exhibition, and also their Great War exhibition, the following events are being held.

Family History Research Workshop – British in India

Join the Families in British India Society (FIBIS) for a day investigating the period of British involvement in India.

The Gallery have kindly allowed us to hold an  open meeting on  10th January, lasting from 10.00 to 16.00, which will include one or two lectures and/or workshops and, for those who prefer it, time for open discussion and networking. See the programme below.

The Herbert Gallery are kindly offering coffee/tea, although a donation would be very much appreciated.   There is a café where you can buy lunch, or you can bring your own. Either or both of the days can finish with a meal at a local Indian restaurant.

The speakers:

Geraldine Charles is a founder trustee of FIBIS and researcher at the National Maritime Museum.    She has delivered lectures on Anglo-Indians and wrote the first FIBIS Fact File on researching Anglo-Indian ancestors.   She is due to deliver the Herbert Illumination on January 20th explaining how she traced the original owners of WWI memorabilia.

Jacqui Kirk is a professional researcher based in the Midlands who can advise on identifying UK sources of information.

Richard Morgan is a former FIBIS trustee who produced the FIBIS Fact files on Directories and on cemeteries in India, as well as writing articles for genealogical magazines.   He also lectures and advises on IT Law.

Herbert Illumination: Poppy Fields and eBay

FIBIS trustee Geraldine Charles will deliver the lunchtime lecture on Tuesday January 20th 2015, entitled “ Poppy Fields and eBay: using WWI memorabilia to trace Anglo-Indian ancestors”.  In the lecture Geraldine explains how she uses WWI memorabilia bought on eBay to research the men and women to whom the objects relate.  Such items can be used as the starting point for family history research and Geraldine tells some of the stories that unfolded when she looked into the family background of her objects ‘ owners.
