Conservation of the Scots’ Cemetery In Kolkata: Beyond the Tangible

29 Mar | News,

SPAB (the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings) Scotland group are hosting an event in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh Centre for Conservation Studies about the ‘conservation of the Scots’ Cemetery In Kolkata, India.’ The lecture is to be given by conservation architect Dr Neeta Das, who has been working with a team of architects, archaeologists, landscape specialists and historians in order to restore the historic landscape environment of the Scots’ cemetery to its former glory. The project comprises not only the scientific restoration of its 1600 tombs and the development of the landscape in which they are set, but also a community led urban regeneration of the area where the cemetery is located in order to secure a future for the site and make it relevant to the city again.

It promises to be an incredibly interesting event, which will provide a unique and insightful presentation of Dr Neeta Das’ experiences of conserving such a monumentally rich landscape, and the history of the connection between Scotland and India.

Date and time: Thursday 4th April 2019 at 6pm for the lecture, to be followed by drinks in the foyer,

Location:  Adam House, 3 Chambers Street, Edinburgh EH1 1HT

Tickets are only £6 and are open to all.
